Catch The Bus To Work For A Week

To combat the dangers of releasing harmful greenhouse gases into the environment through decomposing waste in landfill, plenty of Australians turn to eco friendly products instead of plastic products to lower their contributions.

So if you own a green bag, it’s likely you want to help out the environment – so why not take on the challenge of catching the bus to work or school for a week?

Plastics aren’t the only culprits of greenhouse gas emissions released into the environment. Passenger cars are also a huge environmental issue, and according to Carbon Neutral, accounted for 41.7 million of the total 71.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions generated by transport in the year 2010. This accounted for 86 per cent of Australia’s total national emissions.

In addition, the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics has predicted that this total could rise to 105.2 million tonnes by the year 2020.

With passenger cars such a huge issue for Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions, it makes sense to get as many cars off the road as possible. While walking or biking is the most eco friendly option, for longer distances, taking the bus to work is a viable alternative.

Buses can range anywhere from less than 20 to more than 41 seats, so a full large bus could potentially take up to 40 passenger cars off the road. This could significantly reduce the total amount of greenhouse gases released into the environment.

On top of this major positive, there are other perks to catching a ride on public transport. You won’t need to spend valuable time finding a carpark, and there’s no need to focus on the road – so you could use the time to get some extra work done or read a good book. Plus, the University of Western Australia also estimates catching public transport could save drivers up to $1,000 a year in fuel, maintenance and parking fees.

So what are you waiting for? Challenge yourself and your family to a week on public transport – and if all goes well, commit to making the swap permanently!
