Purchasing eco friendly products is a great way to reduce waste in the form of plastics and other items that may be sent to landfill – but there are other resources that you could be wasting that aren’t as obvious.
Water is just one of these resources you may not think twice about using. However, it’s important we learn to preserve as much of this precious substance as we can.
Without water, animals, humans and plants would all be unable to survive. According to the National Health and Medical Research Council of the Australian Government, water is becoming scarce due to urban development and environmental degradation. Because of this, it is estimated that up to 50 per cent of the world’s population will be living with severe water shortage by 2050.
In addition, the process of pumping, treating and transporting water accounts for around 8 per cent of global energy generation, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.
March 22 is World Water Day, so it’s the perfect time to start thinking about your water habits and perhaps begin to practise a more eco friendly approach with some water saving tips. The first World Water Day was announced by the United Nations General Assembly on March 22, 1993.
This year, the main goal of World Water Day is to raise awareness of the link between water use and energy, along with delivering the key messages that water supply is decreasing while demand is rising, and that saving water means saving energy.
Though you may think you can’t make any impact, small actions taken around the home can mean a big difference when it comes to saving water. Why not challenge the whole family to save water on World Water Day and aim to change habits for the long-term?

• Limiting showers to five minutes or less
• Turning off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth
• Using leftover water to nourish the garden
