Getting Active The Eco Friendly Way With Sports Sustainability

Sports are a part of the typical Aussie household. Not only is watching sport a favourite pastime of many Australian families, up to 4.5 million Australians aged 15 and over took part in an organised sport or physical activity in 2010, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. That’s not counting the amount of backyard games Australian families play each year!

Sport is important for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. However, any activity you participate in needs to also be good for the environment’s wellbeing – that’s why sustainability is important to consider when you sign up for a sports team.

Take these tips for sports sustainability when you next hit the football field or cricket pitch:

Take your own water

If you’re not prepared with everything you need during a sports game, you may end up purchasing items that are not so friendly for our Australian environment. Take plastic water bottles as an example – when playing sport, you’re bound to work up a thirst. And if you haven’t got your own water bottle, buying a plastic bottle is all too tempting.

However, plastic bottles are known to take years to break down and can release greenhouse gases into the environment, as well as posing a threat to Australian wildlife. Stainless steel drink bottles are a great option to fill up before you leave the house, and you’ll be set to quench your thirst during the game – not to mention eliminate your contribution of plastic bottle waste into the environment.

Pack some food for after the game

Like it can make you thirsty, an action-packed game of sport can work up an appetite. Instead of purchasing sideline treats that could come in non recyclable packaging, take along a healthy sandwich or roll in a reusable sandwich wrap for after the game.
