Give Your Home A Green Spring Clean

Spring is here, so what better time to clean out your home? This year, however, give your spring clean a ‘green’ focus. Don’t just throw anything out. Instead, see what might be able to be reused, sold, gifted or donated – and then do a thorough job of recycling the rest.

In the future, think about buying eco friendly products that can be easily reused, or reducing your consumption overall to avoid a new build-up of waste.

Electronic waste

Do you have old computers, cell phones, TVs or other objects lying around taking up space? If they no longer work and can’t be reused or passed on in some other way, then don’t just chuck them in the bin. This is because  electronic waste can cause serious environmental damage as it degrades in landfill.

These products often contain things like mercury and lead, which leaks into the soil and pollutes groundwater. This can pose a major threat to the environment and to humans.

Take your ‘e-waste’ to designated recycling services across the country, such as those participating in the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme. Many manufacturers will also offer recycling programs for their goods, so if you’re unsure enquire with the company.

In the wardrobe

You might want to get rid of last year’s trend pieces, but they’re sure to be of value to someone else. These days there are no excuses for throwing away clothes, with all the options that there are to either donate or sell them.

Clean out your wardrobe and sort anything unwanted into piles for sale, for donation or for gifts to friends and family.

You could even hold a ‘trade day’ for you and your friends where you swap any unwanted garments.
