How To Go Off The Grid

Thinking about taking a break from technology (and all that comes with it) and go off the grid for a few days? You’re not alone. Many people are choosing to get away from city living and try their hand at more eco-friendly accommodation options when they go on holiday.

Here are some tips to help you go off the grid and stay green when you’re in paradise.

Limit your washing

While it can be tempting to wrap yourself in a clean and cuddly hotel towel when you jump out of the shower, see if you can reuse your towels.

After all, most people don’t use a brand new towel every day, so why change this routine when you are away from home?

Reusing your towel reduces the amount of electricity and power the hotel needs in order to do the washing, which helps to knock down their carbon footprint, so you can remain confident you are doing your part for the environment.

Meal and picnic tips

If you plan on heading off the beaten track, you will want to take some snacks with you – hiking is thirsty (and hungry) work.

Rather than relying on plastic drink bottles and plastic bags that go straight to landfill, make sure you pack a good supply of eco-friendly products such as reusable bags and stainless steel drink bottles to ensure you maintain your normal routine, even while you’re away.

Pick up rubbish

When you explore new terrain, make sure you take home any rubbish you create along the way, and if you can, pick up some if you spot it. Aim to collect at least three pieces of rubbish on every walk you undertake.

Cleaning up the environment is one way you and your family can work together to create a more sustainable future as you will be preventing animals from being damaged by rubbish.

If you see any glasses, cans or bottles you might even be able to recycle them, which is a surefire way to help the planet.
