How To Reduce Marine Pollution

In Australia, marine pollution is a big problem with devastating effects. We have so many varieties of unique sea life that can become injured or even die due to the litter and pollution that finds its way into our waterways.

What you can do to reduce marine pollution and help ocean life

Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to reduce instances of marine pollution.

Take 3 is an Australian not-for-profit organisation with the aim of raising awareness of marine debris, and ultimately clearing our beaches and oceans of it.

The organisation urges Australians to collect three pieces of rubbish each time they visit a beach, river or anywhere, taking it away with them as they leave to help clear up marine areas
Surf life savers, fishermen, boaties and surfers can also all play a part in cleaning up.

On an individual level, you can make sure our oceans stay clean by preventing any items of your own from polluting the environment. This can be achieved through using the correct rubbish receptacles and recycling, but even more importantly, using less in the first place.

That means cutting down or eliminating the use of single-use plastic in your household. Plastic bags are one of the easiest items to cut out, as reusable shopping bags are so readily available and convenient.
Instead of using plastic wrap in your child’s lunch box, you can make use of reusable sandwich wraps instead.

Most people will have gone to the beach and seen the havoc that plastic drink bottles can cause strewn across the sand or floating in the water. To make sure you’re not contributing to the problem, use stainless steel drink bottles instead. These can be filled up and taken with you so there’s never any need to reach for bottled water.
