Making The Most Of What’s Local By ‘Going Local’

These days it’s becoming increasingly popular to shop at local markets, village shops and farmer’s stalls. Individuals and communities are figuring out the benefits of supporting local small enterprises like these – and no doubt, their food is tasty!

Why is going local great?

Shopping at local stalls and markets can help local farmers make their living. Often there is also a wide range of fresh and/or organic food, so those who are especially environmentally and health conscious can more easily find items that fit with their requirements.

It’s also a great way for communities to come together, socialise and become more tight-knit. This may sound a bit ‘wishy-washy,’ however that kind of behaviour often breeds happier and healthier societies which have good support systems in place for looking after each other.

The environment often benefits from these kinds of local markets as well. Not only do many of the farmers involved operate organically, but because the food is produced locally and bought by locals, energy isn’t used up in the transport or storage processes – meaning fewer carbon emissions.

Many people also prefer the taste of food from these markets due to the care the farmers take with them as they are not mass-produced and are freshly grown in-season rather than stored and imported.

When you head off to your local market to do some shopping, be sure to bring your reusable shopping bags along with you. You’ll look like a true farmer’s market natural and will blend right in. You can also bring along your reusable produce bags with you specifically for any of the tasty fruit and veggies you might end up buying.
