Progress In Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July is well and truly in full swing. For over three weeks, individuals, households, businesses, councils, schools and other groups from all over the world have ditched single-use plastic to find more eco friendly alternatives.

Participants of Plastic Free July have been finding substitutes to environmentally harmful single-use plastic items such as shopping bags, food wrap and more. While the month of July is nearing its end, more people are still signing up to take part in Plastic Free July every day.

Some extremely innovative ways of encouraging alternatives to single-use plastic have popped up. The City of Perth has run a Plastic Free July instagram photo competition, which catalogues the ways people are replacing plastic with other materials. As well as this, the City has hosted workshops for its staff to educate and empower them on the issues surrounding single-use plastics.

It’s great to see that various companies around Australia have been getting in on the action too. In NSW, DrainCorp has been sending its staff some handy tips for living plastic-free.

Furthermore, Clear Horizon Consulting from Victoria has audited office plastics and is considering their purchasing policies. As well as this, they’re promoting reusable items around the office, and also encouraging staff to take the tips and tricks they’re learning and apply them in their home life, too.

The campaign has a world-wide reach, with Greeneration in Indonesia, The Naked Islands Project in Hong Kong, Bolsalista Smartbags in the USA, EcoOcean in Israel, Sofaspan in Madagascar and Waikato District Council in New Zealand all actively participating and going plastic free for the month.
