Sustainability In The Schoolyard

School is obviously a huge part of any child’s life. If you are trying to pursue more sustainability in your lifestyle, then you may want to look out for a more eco friendly school and schoolyard activities.

Green Star Ratings

Some Australian schools have Green Star ratings, which are awarded by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA).

This ensures that they are well-heated in winter, cooled in summer, well lit and ventilated.

Research has shown that good lighting and ventilation can improve the health of students by 41.5 per cent, and can help them to learn maths and reading more quickly.

Offices that operate sustainability show huge increases in productivity and mental wellbeing, so it’s no surprise that the same thing can happen in sustainable schools.

Many schools also teach children the value of protecting the environment, and how their actions can affect it.

Schools can educate their students on waste reduction and many operate their own programs such as recycling initiatives, growing organic gardens or creating a compost heap.

What else?

You can do your bit for sustainability at school by packing your child’s lunch with products such as reusable sandwich wraps. These eliminate the need for single-use plastic wraps and therefore prevent unnecessary waste from heading to landfill, or ending up as litter around the schoolyard.

You may also want to pack them stainless steel water bottles, as these can be safely reused without any worries about BPA or chemicals. They can also be used time and time again, meaning that the environment won’t be degraded by the unnecessary amount of plastic bottles being used and thrown out.

Bringing sustainability to the schoolyard has many benefits, so don’t be afraid to take a stand – the planet will thank you for it.
