Three Easy Ways To Reduce Food Waste

Food waste sometimes seems like a part of life, but it doesn’t have to be.

Most people will have fairly recent memories of scraping extra food off their plates into the bin, leaving half a dish behind at a restaurant or throwing away part of a takeaway meal.

But these kinds of behaviours are completely avoidable, and if steps are taken to reduce such food waste actions, it could significantly ease the burden on many of the world’s resources.

Here are three easy ways in which you can reduce your levels of food waste.

Buy only what you need

Make a shopping list and stick to it before you go shopping. Carefully take into account the number of people you are buying for and what a realistic amount is, without going overboard. Don’t overbuy a favourite food – it’ll still be there next week!

Make use of what you’ve got

Once you’ve done your shopping, make sure you make good use of it. Don’t waste a bit!  Use it all, and anything that’s leftover can be consumed in lunches the next day, carefully packaged in a reusable sandwich wrap. Don’t forget, the freezer is your friend and can help leftovers keep for longer.

Don’t let it spoil

Make sure you get to items like fresh produce before they expire. Keep a careful eye on your fruits and if things are looking limp make sure to throw them into a dish or stew – that way you’ll have leftovers that are fine for eating.

Some items can be used in creative ways, such as black bananas to bake a delicious cake.

Follow these tips to reduce food waste and you should find yourself not only helping out the environment, but saving money on your grocery bill.
