Top Three Changes To Make If You Want To Be Sustainable

If you want to make your household more sustainable, there are a few changes you can make to reduce your carbon footprint that won’t affect you day-to-day affairs.

Make sustainable choices

Choose your food and other products wisely, not only so that you support locally grown, organic products where possible but that you avoid excess packaging.

Locally produced items use less fuel to get from the paddock to your table, which makes them a greener option. Plus, if you choose organic foods, you will be avoiding the unnecessary pesticides that go into food production.

All the extra wrapping on certain items goes straight to landfill – not the most green option to choose. Instead of using plastic bags at the checkout, use reusable shopping bags instead.

Only buy what you need

A whopping 20 per cent of all food purchased Down Under is wasted, which is not ideal for the environment.

This extra produce lets off methane when it rots in landfill. Methane is more potent than the chemicals that come out of your car exhaust, making it an important area to cut back on.

Some simple steps to take include avoiding the supermarket when you’re hungry, as you will buy more, and going armed with a list to prevent buying things you already have at home.

Be engaged

Actively promote the issue of sustainability and share information with others about this worldwide problem. The more people on board, the more people there will be attacking this issue.

There are a number of blogs and news websites you can follow to ensure you are kept in the loop about the latest developments in the sector.
