Top Tips For A Sustainable Holiday Season

Tis the season to be jolly, and often to overindulge, which can mean more waste sent to landfill.

Whether it be decking the halls, filling up the stockings or feeding the masses, there are always elements you can cut back on this Christmas and have a more sustainable holiday season.

Buy less

Instead of purchasing brand new decorations for your tree, why not reuse heirloom decorations? This is an easy, thoughtful way to decorate your home and you may even be able to create a new family tradition.

When you do the Christmas grocery shop, make sure you don’t get carried away, as so many of us are prone to do at this time of year. Only buy what you will really eat.

According to Cleanup Australia, around $7.6 billion is spent on food during December and about 20 per cent of this is thrown out.

Purchasing only what you need will reduce this, and if you do end up with leftovers, try to eat them in the following days.

Meats and vegetables can make delicious Boxing Day sandwiches and if you’re on the go, you can pop them in reusable sandwich wrap for safekeeping.

Buy carefully

We all receive gifts we don’t want or need at some point, so try to avoid being the one responsible for presents languishing in cupboards for years to come.

Try to tailor presents so you are really buying something the recipient wants. If you cannot achieve this, consider giving the gift of time. Movie or concert tickets make great presents and do not require loads of wrapping that you know will be sent to landfill eventually.

Practical gifts that can be reused, such as reusable bags and bpa free water bottles, won’t go amiss.

Buy responsibly

Try to limit the amount of goods you purchase that come with additional plastic wrapping.

These items often go straight to landfill, which is not ideal if there are more eco-friendly products out there and does not make for a sustainable holiday season.
