Why You Should Drink More Water

We all know that drinking water is incredibly important for health – but do you know just how vital it is for your physical and mental wellbeing? Most people can benefit if they drink more water each day.

Why you need water

Water supports all of your body’s physical functions. From keeping your bloodstream flowing to regulating your body temperature and carrying oxygen and nutrients around your body, you just can’t do without it.

It’s essential for your brain too, as without enough water you will start to notice slower reaction times, lower moods and a general lack of focus and energy.

If you don’t get enough

Not drinking enough water leads to dehydration, which can affect your health in numerous ways. It can start with headaches, tiredness and dry mouth and lips, but can lead to more serious consequences.

On average, an adult woman should aim to drink 2.1 litres of water daily, while an adult man should drink 2.6 litres.

If you live or work in a hot environment, engage in lots of physical activity or have certain medical conditions, you probably need to drink more water than the average person.

How you can drink more water

Give yourself a few reminders to drink more water throughout the day.

A good place to start is by investing in a stainless steel drink bottle. This handy reusable item can be carried with you wherever you go, so you’ve always got a reminder to hydrate on hand. It’s also a lot better for the environment than disposable plastic alternatives.

It can also be handy to put a note or alarm in your mobile phone, to pop up at regular intervals so you don’t forget. If you work at a desk, you might want to place post-it notes alongside your computer screen as a visual reminder.

Do your best to drink a little more water each day, and you’re bound to reap the benefits.
