Would You Drive An Electric Car?

These days there are an increasing number of eco friendly products and options on the market to help us make more sustainable lifestyle choices.

As traffic congestion and the carbon emissions generated from motor vehicles continue to be a problem, more and more people are searching for ‘green’ solutions.

What are the alternatives?

Instead of driving a car, catching the bus or taking a train can be a convenient and easy option. Especially in cities, public transport infrastructure is highly available and reliable. This means that, for many people, taking a bus or train is an extremely viable option.

As well as this, public transport fares tend to be reasonable and a lot cheaper than paying for fuel. If the idea of relinquishing your car for good is a scary one, then consider splitting car and public transport use 50/50, or only using your car for long drives or when you have to transport items such as groceries or luggage.

Electric cars

An electric car is another ‘green’ travel option. While they don’t take cars off the road to reduce congestion, they do help to reduce carbon emissions.  This is because they use a battery that can be charged through renewable sources of electricity instead of using fuel, which results in greenhouse gasses.

The market for these vehicles in Australia is just starting to heat up as more people choose to embrace the technology.

There is currently an electric vehicle trial underway in Victoria, which has involved the launch of an electric vehicle hub that includes a fast-charging station as well as electric vehicles for public hire. Located in Moreland City, this station is available free of charge, and locals will be encouraged to participate.

Can you find any opportunities in your own life to make sustainable choices – for instance, could you use public transport more often? How about driving an electric car?
