Behind The Reusable Coffee Cup: Australian Coffee Habits Revealed

There’s nothing like a strong espresso in your reusable coffee cup to start the working day, and plenty of Australians feel the same way when it comes to their morning coffee fix.

According to new research from Roy Morgan, coffee habits have changed within Australia in recent years. One of the key findings was that although the average number of cups drank per week is on the decline, the amount of visitors to cafes and those who own coffee makers has increased.

Over the past decade, consumption of coffee has decreased from an average of 10.5 cups to 9.2 cups consumed per week. However, visitors to cafes for coffee and tea has risen from 54 per cent in December 2009 to 56 per cent in December 2013.

On top of this, the amount of Australians who own their own coffee machine has significantly increased to 36 per cent owning one in 2013, compared to just 28 per cent in 2009. This is great news for eco friendly Australians, as making coffee at home significantly reduces the waste created by disposable coffee cups.

Coffee drinkers with their own machine are far more likely to use reusable coffee cups to transport their home brew, or rely on the plain old ceramic mug for an early morning pick-me-up.

Interestingly, the study also revealed that those working long hours (60 plus) are more likely to drink a higher amount of cups than those working shorter hours.

Consumption is also likely to be higher for parents, with the study revealing the average weekly consumption rises from 7.2 cups for non-parents to 9.6 for parents – perhaps it’s a great stress-reliever!

No matter where you get your coffee or how many you drink per week, the most important factor is to remember to use a reusable coffee cup to consume your beverage. Take yours to your local cafe or use it to make your own coffee at home – it’s convenient and best for our environment!
