Get Excited For Aussie’s Largest Solar Power Plant

Many Australians have embraced solar power technology by installing rooftop solar panels for their households or businesses.

This has been part of what is a global effort to become more energy efficient and reduce carbon emissions.

In more exciting news pertaining to Australia’s solar power development, the largest solar power plant in the southern hemisphere is soon to begin construction in New South Wales.

The project is being developed by AGL Energy Limited (AGL) with funding from both the federal and state government. Two power plants will be constructed. One will be in Nyngan with a 102 MW capacity, while the other solar power plant will be at Broken Hill, with a 53 MW capacity. That’s a lot of solar power! Enough, even, to power around 50,000 homes in the NSW area every year.

“Australia has the highest average solar radiation per square metre of any continent in the world and we should take advantage of that natural asset,” said Mark Butler, minister for climate change.

“This project is 15 times larger than any other solar power station in Australia and represents a big step forward towards making solar a bigger part of Australia’s energy mix.”

The massive solar power plants combined will take up an area four times larger than Sydney’s CBD.

What can you do?

You may want to invest in eco friendly products such as rooftop solar panels for your home if you are extremely dedicated to making your home more energy efficient and reducing its environmental impact.

Otherwise you can start small by reducing the amount of electricity you use, eliminating single-use plastic from your household and walking or using public transport more.
