Renewable Energy In Australia

As caring for the environment is becoming increasingly important, Australia is getting in on the game with a growing number of eco friendly initiatives focused on renewable energy.

More people are choosing to buy eco friendly products and embrace waste-free items such as reusable bags.

On the larger scale, renewable energy is playing a huge role. Instead of generating the entire nation’s electricity with fossil fuels causing large amounts of carbon pollution, more and more of our energy is coming from clean energy sources, such as solar power, wind power, or hydropower.

The great thing about these kinds of electricity is that unlike resources such as coal and fuel, things like sunshine and wind are endlessly renewable, and here in Australia we are particularly lucky to have a lot of sun and wind.

Over one million households – and growing – in Australia already have solar panels installed on their roofs, generating their electricity or hot water, and saving them money on their bills.

There are also a number of large-scale solar and wind power plants providing a more sizeable amount of electricity to the grid.

However, there are still many more untapped areas in the nation which have great potential to provide solar and wind energy.

According to the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), South Australia is setting on a ‘goldmine of potential renewable energy industries’ – with a particularly suitable environment for wind power generation. Currently, wind power generation supplies 26 per cent of the state’s energy.

These technologies are also becoming more viable as their prices drop – for instance the cost of solar panels has come down by 80 per cent in four years – making them more accessible to everyday Australians.
