To enlighten us on just how good these lights are, the City of Sydney has lit up the town with them and proven that there are some big savings to be made.

Over 2,600 LED lights have been installed around the city to replace older models, and eventually 6,488 of these older lights will be upgraded. New South Wales also plans to use LED lighting in a number of council areas across Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter region.

So far the LED lights have saved the City of Sydney almost $300,000 in power bills, cutting down on energy use by over 25 per cent in the last 16 months since the initiative began. Sydney Mayor Clover Moore said that the use of LED lighting, once in full swing, will save the city up to $800,000 in energy bills. In addition to this it will also reduce carbon emissions by  more than 40 per cent.

“LED lights have already cut energy consumption by our street and park lights by 27.6 per cent and stopped 1,547 tonnes of carbon emissions from going into the atmosphere,” said Ms Moore.

“This saving benefits the City financially, but it also helps make Sydney a cleaner, greener place for all.”
